Special Registration: Discrimination and Xenophobia as Government Policy

cover of Special Registration: Discrimination and Xenophobia as Government PolicyThis 2004 survey report was cowritten by me and Sin Yen Ling at Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). It documented the government’s abuses of predominantly Muslim immigrant communities in the United States through the Special Registration, or NSEERS, program. Among other conclusions, it found that “Special Registration, had been used to selectively track and deport Muslim men in the United States.” At the time of writing, over 13,000 men and boys, mostly Muslim, had been put into deportation proceedings through the program out of a total of over 80,000 who had been forced to submit to interviews and the collection of biometric information.
